Yeoville Tour

Yeoville was proclaimed a suburb in 1890 by Thomas Yeo Sherwell, who came from Yeovil in the United Kingdom.

By 1970 it was a Jewish area with a number of Synagoues and was certified as one of the" white only" areas during the Apartheid years. In the 1980’s artists, musicians, student and political activists started coming to Yeoville.

By 1998 Yeoville was a 90% black area. As it was founded by immigrants like Joe Slovo (Eastern Europe) and Thomas Yeo (UK), it has one again turned into a community of immigrants.

Come and have the pan African experience. Take a walk in Yeoville and learn more about the history and the architectural work – with the wonderful designs of the flats and houses. Go to the busy streets of Rocky and Raleigh where there is a vibe throughout the day. Explore the area from Tandoori (which turned into a Rastafarian spot) through to the Yeoville market - where you can get fresh fruit and vegetables, African vegetables, clothes, saloons, crafts and cooked meals. Take a walk down the busy shops, supermarkets and the community centre. Don’t miss the mosaic art at the Yeoville swimming pool. Have a cold drink at Ikhaya Restaurant and back home.

Soweto Tour

Soweto is one of the best known townships in South Africa, because of its part in the anti-Apartheid struggle through the 1976 student uprisings. It has been a home to our greatest leaders, such as: Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Walter Sisulu.

Places of interest:

  • Regina Mundi – Catholic Church that was the site of meetings and demonstrations during the struggle
  • Nelson Mandela house
  • Hector Peterson Memorial – The first student who was killed during the student uprising in 1976.
  • Visit the informal settlements and experience how people survive.
  • Then have lunch in one of Soweto’s restaurants and dig your fingers into real African food.

Troyville Tour

Did you know? Mahatma Ghandi, lived in Troyville. Let’s take a cab on a Sunday and visit his house. You will drive through Ellis Park, China City and view artwork made from recycled material at Spanza Art Gallery. They also do mosaic art like the hearts at the Yeoville swimming pool and Troyville park. You can then have a vegetarian meal prepared by DJ Sanza from Metro fm. After Lunch we visit Ghandi house.

City Tour

Experience the minibus taxi ride from Yeoville, HIllbrow to the Constitution Hill, where you will get to know about Nelson Mandela and the other activists’ long walk to freedom (1 hour tour).

From Constitution Hill you take a walk (not a ride) through Braamfontein over Mandela bridge to Newtown (Museum Africa Market Theatre, SA Breweries and African craft), one of the oldest areas in Johannesburg.

After a good rest at the Moyo’s restaurant, then proceed into town walking through tall buildings, to the tallest of them, the Carleton centre (50th floor, 233m tall). View Johannesbug from South to North, East to West (a telescope is available to view the areas closer, just insert a coin).

After this wonderful tour then catch a bus home from Ghandi Square.
