Backpacking is fun. You’re travelling the world seeing sights and hearing sounds you never thought you’d get to experience. But, the truth of it is, there are occasions it can become a little boring. When you’re sat on that train for hours on end or walking across a city on the hunt for your hostel.

It’d be a relief then, if you had a few luxury items stowed away in your pack.

But they’ll just take up room and add more weight!

Some will. But there are other luxury items that are light and perfect for backpacking. Here we’re going to look at 5 of them.

MP3 Player – Nothing helps a boring journey or a dull 15 minutes fly by better than music. If you’re spending a lot of time alone on your backpacking trip be sure to pack an MP3 player rammed with music.

So when you’re wandering across a strange city you can simply plug your headphones in. Time will fly by.

E-Reader – Stephen King once said that books are an ‘escape hatch’, they transport you to another world. So when the place you’re in is dull, like a tram or a bus, turn your e-reader on.

Sure, you could take a real book, but you can only pack the one and it’ll probably weigh quite a bit. An e-reader’s light and can hold literally thousands and thousands of books.

You’ll never be bored again.

Journal – Backpacking throws up a huge variety of experiences. And you’re going to want to capture every single one of them.

Pack a journal. In it you can draw pictures of the stunning scenery you’re looking at, make notes of your favourite restaurants and simply write something down to remember it.

And when you’re backpacking trip is over you’ll have a small book to flick through and act as a reminder to everything that happened.

Camera –You’d regret heading out on your backpacking trip without a camera. Make sure you pack one. How else will you remember those crazy nights in Johannesburg or the days spent traversing Kruger national park?

Traveller turn photographer.

Cards – You’re going to make friends everywhere you go. Hostels are friendly places. And that’s great; it means you won’t have to go it alone.

Pack a deck of cards and you and your new friends can remain entertained for hours on end.
