Anita, owner of 2BHappy in Mountain View, Johannesburg, shares her top five things to do in Johannesburg this winter.

Her focus is on restaurants, for those who would like to go out for a meal as a change from self-catering at 2Bhappy or getting one of Patience’s home cooked meals.

No 1: Maboneng district

Her first share is the Maboneng district. She loves the vibrant atmosphere, the diversity of people who frequent the place, and the wide variety of restaurants to choose from. Getting there is in itself an adventure. From 2BHappy, one passes Yeoville, Berea, Hillbrow and the inner city to get there. Maurice, from 2BHappy often takes guests there and if you travel with him youll get a running commentary on the way. And in the blink of an eye, you depart from a city which has an element of pain, to the upbeat throb of Maboneng.

The Living Room

The Living Room

Anita took two of 2BHappy’s backpackers to The Living Room, which has awesome views of the city and lots of plants to admire. The drinks are interesting and delicious and the hammocks very comfy!

The Canteen

Garden lit at night with a small crowd

The Canteen

Her brother and now sister in law got married at the Canteen, which has a funky rooftop area, a fireplace downstairs in an intimidate dining room and the option to sit outside under the olive trees. The selection of wines is excellent – Anita’s favourites from Springfield are available here.

Go on a Friday-Sunday, should you want to experience a lively vibe. On a Sunday, the market will keep you entertained for hours.  For a more chilled atmosphere, go any other day.
