South African cuisine is as diverse as its people, so wherever you’re coming from, whatever your taste they’ll be something for you. But if you’re a little adventurous and want to truly take South Africa in you’re going want to try these six dishes.

Boerewors – This is a type of sausage that’s a mix of mince meat and unique South African spices. Be wary though, many South Africans like to try and convince unsuspecting travellers that it is in fact snake meat that they’re eating. That’s because the coil of the sausage does in fact look a little snake like. Don’t worry though, it isn’t!

Biltong – Probably the most popular snack in all of South Africa, Biltong is similar to beef jerky in taste and texture. The difference is in how it’s cured – but we guarantee that it’ll leave you wanting more. And give you quite a thirst for your next fix of lager.

Bunny chow – Despite the weird name, a Bunny Chow is something you’re going to have to try for yourself. It consists of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry. How good does that sound? It’s often served with Pap, another South African favourite that’s a little like corn-flower.

Babotie – This dish consists of spiced mince meat baked with an egg topping. Might sound like an odd combination to anyone travelling here, but it really is delicious. It originates from the Cape Malay community who descended from slaves brought here from what is today known as Indonesia.

Vetkoek – This is a fairly unhealthy snack… okay, really unhealthy – but well worth treating yourself to while you stay. This fast food snack consists of dough that is deep-fried and then stuffed with mincemeat. We also fill it with jam, syrup, or honey.

Chakalaka – Again, this is best served with Pap. It is a spicy vegetable relish, and when we say spicy, we mean spicy. It is thought to have originated in the townships of Johannesburg and has quite a few variants. Find which one your favourite is and let us know!
