If you’re having the time of your life travelling the world then the last thing that you want is to be struck down by illness in an unfamiliar country.

Follow these tips to stay fighting fit and enjoy your adventures.

Stay active

When you’re off travelling your usual exercise and fitness regimes will probably go straight out the window.  Make sure that you stay active by choosing to walk places wherever possible.  If you’re lucky enough to be staying somewhere where there is a gym, fitness centre or swimming pool then make time for a short workout each day.

Get a good night’s sleep

Sometimes backpacker’s hostels can be noisy and you may find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.  Make sure you pack earplugs and an eye mask and try to get 7-8 hours sleep as often as possible.  If you’re constantly fatigued then you’re going to end up getting rundown and sick sooner or later.

Beware of the water

Depending on the area that you’re travelling in it can be best to avoid drinking tap water; this includes ice cubes in your drink.  Buy bottled water wherever possible and check that the bottle is properly sealed before drinking it.

Beware of buffet foods

If you’re staying at accommodation where buffet food is available then think about how hygienic it looks.  If the food is left out in warm conditions for long periods of time then it’s quite likely that it could upset your stomach so it’s best to steer clear.

Make sure you’re vaccinated

Before you even think about setting off on your travels you should check out what vaccinations are advised and make sure you’re fully vaccinated against any illnesses and diseases.
